One great thing about the ‘Lockdown in Lagos’ is the opportunity it has brought for so many to learn new online skills, utilising some form of digital technology or the other.

E-learning or computer-based learning has been at an all-time high in urban part of Lagos and other cosmopolitan cities in Nigeria.

E-learning (or computer-based learning) is a learning conducted via electronic media, typically on the internet.

E-learning is not a new phenomenon in promoting education in some parts of the world.

Presently, some institutions in Nigeria are using it to promote distance education (DE) and life-long learning. Even state governments have been forced to fast-track the use of this system for college students, during the lockdown periods across Nigeria, in some respective states.

In this modern age, learning with the use of computers is simply an online way of acquiring knowledge through the internet or offline – CD-ROM.

Learning online involves the use of Internet Explorer/Navigator. It may be in form of Audio, Visual, and/or Audio/Visual.

The convergence of the internet and learning or Internet-enabled learning is called e-learning.

The applications and process of e-learning includes computer-based learning, web-based learning, virtual classroom and digital collaboration where content is delivered via the internet, intranet/extranet, audio and/or video tapes, satellite TV.

Most formal e-learning centres around the country (patronised by many students) have been on hold since the nationwide lockdown of schools, a few months back. But a lot of free online courses, webinars & podcasts have sprung up to close the gap, in this area.

The adoption of e-learning methods by both the young and not so young, should be considered as a necessity in post Covid 19 operations by offices, schools and individuals.

Looking at this platform of learning, kudos should be given to all organisations and educational institutions who have been in the forefront of this method of teaching for quite a while.

Now is the time that we as women should avail ourselves and our families (especially our children) of the variety of online courses available to equip us all for post Covid-19 skill sets.

In Nigeria, the recent developments and awareness of the Government on ICT have opened an opportunity to adopt e-learning to deliver distance education for educating a mass of its uneducated or less educated peoples.

It is sincerely hoped that very soon, even Nigeria as a country will also adopt fully e-governance like Dubai), to enable all citizens access most services online, saving time, money and possibly reducing large traffic jams in the cities in the very near future.

E-learning is now widely available online and in diverse institutions and countries around the world.

Ensure you keep your post Covid-19 e-skills in your relevant professional/business field up to date, so we can pull through all the e- skill set challenges of the future.
